Through an examination of recent case law from the European Court of Human Rights regarding criminal proceedings, the author assesses the actual state of judicial fairness across Member States, identifying risks of violations and discussing the complexities of a multilevel system of human rights protection.

Carlos López-Veraza
Autor
He studied at Comillas Pontifical University and the University of Göttingen, finishing his Diploma in Business Studies in 2007 and his degree in law in 2009. Subsequently, and during his professional practice, he pursued a Master’s Degree in European Union Law and Multi-Level System of Fundamental Rights (2019) from the National Distance Education University. He entered the Public Prosecutor’s Office in 2011, working first in the Huelva Public Prosecutor’s Office (between 2012 and 2020) and later in the Elche-Orihuela Prosecutor’s Office. Currently, he works as a lawyer at the European Court of Human Rights under a study leave from the European Judicial Training Network. He was the delegate for road safety at the Huelva Provincial Public Prosecutor’s Office in 2019, as well as part of the Public Prosecutor’s Service for the Protection of Disabled Persons and in the field of aliens. He has given presentations at both the national al international levels, mainly concerning the fight against human trafficking. Moreover, he is the author of numerous legal articles on sensitive issues and the defence of fundamental rights.
